Mental Health & COunseling

Christy Law - District Social Worker/Counseling Coordinator

District Social Worker/Mental Health Services:

The district social worker works with the building administrators, special services team, and general education staff to determine and prioritize mental health needs of the school. Mental health services are accessible to all students, staff, and parents in the Germantown Municipal School District.

Helping create safe, caring, and motivating schools for all students is an important goal. Mental health services provide ongoing support to schools in the attainment of this goal. The mental health team embraces a preventative and early intervention model. Efforts are made to work collaboratively with students, staff, and parents to foster success and resiliency. Through problem-solving, IEP team procedures, the social/emotional/behavioral education and training provided by the mental health team supports academic achievement and development of life skills. In addition, the mental health team helps to identify and understand an individual student's strengths and needs, so these can be included in school success planning.

For more information on social work services in the Germantown Municipal School District, please contact: Christy Law, L.C.S.W.

School Counseling Services

School Counselors are professional educators with a mental health perspective who understand and respond to the challenges presented by today’s diverse student population. School Counselors are integral to the total educational program.  They work closely with teachers, parents/guardians, administration and school staff. They provide proactive leadership that engages all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to help students achieve school success. School Counselors work in three domains: Academics, Personal/Social, and Postsecondary/Career.

Each GMSD School is staffed with professional school counselors who can provide the following services, as based on both the Tennessee Model for School Counseling and the American School Counselor Association:

  • Developmentally appropriate classroom guidance lessons
  • Individual and small group counseling
  • Consultation and collaboration with parents, administrators, teachers, support staff, and community agencies
  • Staff development
  • Seminars for parents
  • Student advocacy
  • Social services and mental health agency referrals
  • Prevention and intervention programs

All school counselors in GMSD schools are professionals, have a master's degree or higher in school counseling, meet the state certification/licensure standards, and uphold ethical and professional standards of the American School Counseling Association. In addition, school counselors implement prevention programs for mental health and can aid families in locating other helpful resources.

You may contact your child's school counselor by visiting the schools webpage or by simply contacting the student's school directly.

Any questions regarding school counseling can be directed at the school counseling coordinator, Christy Law at (901) 752-7900 Ext. 7877 or email: christy.law@gmsdk12.org.
